What is healing anyway? One definition of the word 'heal' is 'to become whole.' When a wound on the surface of your skin heals, that part of your skin becomes whole again - like it was in the beginning - before the injury. What you were doing when you got the injury may have been enjoyable for you or not. You may have learned some lessons from the event or not. The injury may seemingly have been accidental. Someone else may have hurt you. You may have hurt yourself. This condition of no longer being whole could have come about in a number of ways.
As I speak of healing, implied in all that I say is that each one of us has lived many lifetimes before this one. Call it reincarnation or re-embodiment or eternal life or whatever you want. But, who we are today is the culmination of the experiences of many, many lifetimes. At some point along the continuum of life, we were whole beings. Most of us are not that way now. We are injured in some fashion - physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually. And our search for the face of God which satisfies us now must necessarily include an aspect of healing ourselves and trying to become whole again.
In our culture, healing is most often associated with those who have an M.D. degree from an accredited medical school. In fact, we associate healing so strongly with those who have graduated from medical school that, when presented with a new healing methodology, the first thing we do is ask our doctor about it. As a nation, we have become so entwined with doctors that any form of healing which does not have their blessing is considered quackery and many times is declared illegal - no matter how many people it has helped.
Now, MD medicine has its place. It is superb at handling physical trauma - there is nothing better anywhere on the planet. Our surgeons are very skilled. I, personally, would be blind if it were not for such skills. The field of reconstructive surgery is home to many talented people who do lots of good work. Our diagnostic capabilities are marvelous. But, what's important to note here is that all this skill comes into play after the fact of an injury or an illness. What our MDs do not seem to be able to do is keep us well. Our well-being is viewed through the lens of medical school training. If it wasn't covered in medical school curriculum, it must not be any good.
That is not the kind of healing we will be looking at here. In fact, we will be looking at almost every kind of healing but that. Helping one's being move into wholeness is the work of a lifetime. The more whole we are as individuals, the more the God-energy can move through us.
Now, let's stop here a minute and talk about the word 'God.' That is a word with many connotations - some comfortable - some not so comfortable. I like it. It's easy to spell and easy to pronounce. Sometimes I think of God as Mother/Father God. Sometimes I think of God as limitless beingness from which all else in the universe derives life. Sometimes I think of God as an old white man with a long flowing beard. Sometimes I think of God as Goddess involved in deep ritual in the dark of night. And sometimes I think of God as love - simply love.
There may be those of you who will be chagrined by my use of the word God. If that's the case, try to translate it in your mind to something you are more comfortable with. If you like the word and are comfortable with it don't get stuck on your image of God. You were created in God's image and God doesn't necessarily express only through your image of her. Give her some freedom and in so doing, give yourself some freedom. Having said that, let's return to the topic of healing.
Taking the healing journey can lead us into some very uncomfortable places. Healing can take place on many levels at once. Let's say, for instance, that you decide to go to a massage therapist to get rid of those kinks in your shoulders. Your massage is going along well when the therapist arrives at a particularly knotty spot in your left shoulder. As she works on your shoulder, you want to burst into tears. Then you begin to remember a time when you were 7 years old and you had created a work of art in school. You brought it home to show your mother and she barely glanced at it before she went back to what she was doing. "That's nice, dear" she said. And that was the end of her interest. You were devastated. You had worked so hard on it. You had made it especially for her and she barely noticed it. So you took your disappointment and stuck it somewhere. Now you've found it again - all these years later - right there in that knot in your left shoulder. And now you have to feel all that pain again. See what I mean about healing happening on more than one level and leading us into some uncomfortable places. And, for many people, there are places that are way more uncomfortable than the one I just described. But, if we are willing to go consciously into those places, they can really be healed this time around.
I used massage therapy in my example. There are many, many healing methodologies available to most of us in the U.S. today. Some states are more lenient in this respect than others. In my state, things like massage, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, homeopathy, naturopathy, herbal therapy and many more are very available. I hope that is true where you live.
The journey we take in our search for God is, by its very nature, a journey into wholeness. Please have the courage to take that journey. I will see you at the top of the mountain.

When is a massage not just a massage?
If you thought that there was only one kind of massage, think again. This little list will introduce to the vast world of massage therapy. And it is not even complete.
Massage affects the body as a whole. To understand how massage therapy works, some of the physiological effects of massage need to be briefly examined.
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
You know your body is different from everyone else’s. Wouldn't it be great if there were a doctor who has the ability to find out what is unique about you and your problems? Wouldn’t it be great if that same doctor could give treatments and lifestyle recommendations which are specific to your particular needs? There is such a doctor available, and that doctor is an applied kinesiologist.

The phone rang. From a thousand miles away, Belinda Farrell could hear the panic in the caller's voice. "Belinda, you don't know me, but a friend told me about you. My girlfriend is on a suicide watch. I don't know what to do. Can you help?"
This past summer, twelve-year-old Sally Reeves had cancer throughout every bone in her body. In spite of extensive chemotherapy, she knew she was dying. Even her doctors had told her they were surprised she had made it this long. But before she died, Sally wanted to speak to all the other kids in the hospital who also had cancer. In front of 1200 people, she said her goodbyes, explaining that she was ready to die, and encouraging the others not to fear death. She told the children she would meet them on the other side when they got there. Then something unexplainable happened...
