The practice of Transcendental Meditation or TM was brought from India to the West in the early 1960s by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Many people have written much on the web and in other places about this technique which is still very widely practiced today. The practice has been shrouded in some secrecy. Communities have grown up around the practice. Organizations which teach the practice find themselves able to charge fairly large sums of money to teach the practices associated with Transcendental Meditation.
My very first experience with meditation was with TM. It was in the mid 1970s. I lived in southern California quite close to the Self-Realization Fellowship on Sunset Blvd. I used to go up there just to walk and experience the place itself because it was so beautiful. Eventually, I was drawn to take the introductory course which they offered to anyone who could pay for it. I could and I did. At the time I was given a personal mantra to use in my practice and I was asked not to reveal my mantra. I didn’t and still haven’t to this day. For all I know, my mantra could have been exactly the same as everyone else’s. But, I gave my word and I’ve kept it.
Though I haven’t practiced this form of meditation for a number of years, I still remember the mantra. Just recently I thought I’d try it out again. The mantra no longer spoke to me. However, when I first received it, it spoke very clearly to me.
I participated in the practice quite regularly just as I had been trained to do – 25 minutes twice a day. I was very consistent with the practice and know that I received many benefits from it. My mind began to gain a little self-control. Thoughts which had previously taken me on dizzying merry-go-round rides began to recede into the background and eventually disappear. I felt a calm presence begin to appear where there had been constant upset. TM was a very valuable part of my life for 3 or 4 years. For some people I knew at that time and others whom I know today, the practice was very alive for them and has been for many, many years.
During one of my meditations I had a very unusual experience.
I've described it here.
I'd be interested to know what you think about my experience.
This website will not attempt to teach you Transcendental Meditation. That is not our prerogative. What we will say is that, like any powerful technique, TM has generated its share of proponents and critics. There are those who will tell you that the process has changed their lives and that could not live without it. There are others who will tell you that it is a scam and that you should avoid it.
Although this range of opinions is fairly broad, I believe that those who feel that it has been life-changing for them in a positive way are closer to the truth than are the skeptics. The practice is not for everyone. Not everyone can afford what the organization charges. The fact that the organization charges so much to learn the techniques is probably the source of much of the controversy around it. But we’ll leave that aspect of the teachings to those who like to debunk things and concentrate here on the value to be had from the practice.
The fact that this practice (among others) gives its practitioners access to the deepest aspects of consciousness – access even to the quantum level – where one can experience that ocean of pure consciousness and allow that ocean of consciousness to infuse their lives with creativity, love, awareness makes the practice worth it for all who are able to enjoy it.
Over the years scientific studies have shown that brain wave coherence is enhanced by the practice of TM. And what does that mean? It means that the practitioners experience increased creativity, an enhanced ability to learn new concepts, higher Grade Point Averages and just a better general experience of life.
And the better life experience of the practitioners translates into their being able to infuse the world around them with more of their own consciousness and helps enhance the consciousness of the planet as a whole. As individual awareness grows, so grows planetary consciousness. But it all starts at home, in your mind, your heart, your access to the deepest levels of consciousness which Transcendental Meditation can give you access to.
