Back in the 1930s, the U.S. Government released a report stating that the soil in this country was sadly depleted of the minerals that were needed in order to grow nutritious fruits and vegetables.
This was over 70 years ago - 70 years ago!
What does that mean to you in your quest to eat good healthy food with lots of vitamins and minerals!?
It means that maybe your entire life has been spent eating food grown in soil that could not produce food that will help you stay healthy. Now, even if more recently, you've realized the benefits of organically grown fruits and vegetables and have switched to them, how many of your formative years were spent eating the other kind? Probably all of them.
So, let's say that somewhere along the line, you realized that you weren't getting what you needed from your foods and you started taking daily vitamin supplements to help you stay healthy. Well, if you did that, you deserve congratulations for thinking about it and actually doing it. But, here’s some more bad news. Probably 2/3 of those daily vitamin supplements you were taking to help you get healthy were going straight down the drain.
Did you realize that?
2/3 of them were going down the drain - sometimes maybe more - depending on the quality of the vitamin supplement. And here you are just trying to keep yourself healthy!
Now why is that?
Well, there are a couple of reasons that your daily vitamin supplements weren't really getting into your body the way you wanted them to. First of all, there’s WATER.
Do you drink 8-10 8 oz glasses of pure water a day?
Do you even drink that much water in a week?
And, are you drinking soda, coffee, black tea and carbonated water instead? These drinks not only limit the ability of the body, at the cellular level, to absorb vitamin supplements and nutrients into the cells and to release toxins which build up inside the cells; they actively destroy the cells. That's no way to stay healthy.
When cells are treated like this, they start to act like the desert in the middle of a summer without rain. They become unable to absorb any of the vitamin supplements you give them. You know how the water just runs off when it rains after the soil gets really dry? It can't be absorbed because the ground is so dry. Your cells can get like that - unable to absorb anything at all and that's why your vitamin supplements and other nutrient aren't getting into your cells.
This is a pretty bleak picture, isn't it?
Well, let's make it a little bleaker.
How's your immune system?
Did it start out in a weakened condition because you weren't breast fed as a baby? The colostrum in mother’s milk is what helps grow a strong immune system and let's you get healthy from the start of your life. Assuming, of course, mother had enough colostrum in her body to give some to you. If she didn’t, then you didn’t get it even if you were breast-fed. So even as a baby, maybe you couldn't even get a healthy start.
Has your immune system been weakened by repeated use of antibiotics?
And have those same antibiotics ruined all the good flora in your colon so that you can't absorb your vitamin supplements and your food and eliminate your waste material? And since the food many of us eat today is completely lacking in enzymes and can't be broken down and used by the body, it sits undigested and putrefying in the bowels releasing toxins into the body. (Sorry. I know it’s disgusting but that’s what happens. See the previous chapter on detoxification.) And we haven't even talked about environmental and personal stressors on our bodies - work, bills, exhaust fumes, fluorescent lights, computers, etc ,etc, etc.

Don’t despair. There are lots of things you can do to get yourself healthy again - or maybe for the first time in your life.
And what are they?

Now, let’s talk a little about enzymes and your digestion. If you remember, earlier I spoke about the lack of enzymes in the food you eat. Well, just in case you are wondering what enzymes are and why they are important, here’s the story.
Enzymes are the little guys that help with the process of digestion. They’re made up of proteins whose job is to change certain substances in your body into other substances that your body needs. Here’s an example of how they work.
Think about getting grease on your clothes or your hands. If you just try to wash it off with water, nothing happens. The water just slides around on it because the grease isn’t water soluble. But if you use a cleanser with enzymes in it, the grease just seems to break up into little globules and wash away. It’s been changed into something else that’s now water soluble.
That’s kind of how enzymes work during the process of digestion. They break food down so that it can be used by the body.
If the small intestine gets a piece of poorly chewed and undigested carrot, it doesn’t know what to do with it. But if that same piece of carrot has been digested, then the body can extract the Vitamin C and Beta Carotene from it.
Well, since enzymes are destroyed at a temperature of 128 degrees, you can be sure that most of the food you eat, has no living enzymes in it.
How does food get digested then?
One of two things happens: either enzymes are pulled from other body functions to do the work of digestion or your food goes undigested into your digestive system. If enzymes are pulled from other sources, then the functions those enzymes were supposed to perform don’t get done - and that's no way to get healthy. If the food simply doesn’t get digested, then it sits and rots in your small intestines and your colon. And then the toxins produced in that rotting process are released into your body giving your already over-stressed body something more to deal with. And that's certainly no way to get healthy.

Now, DHA, all by itself will probably not be the total solution to ADD/ADHD and Alzheimer’s but it is an incredibly important part and must not be overlooked. I could go on for a long time here, but I'll stop now.
